In his speech before the National Conference on District Judiciary held in New Delhi, the Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi highlighted the necessity of fast-tracking the cases relating to crimes committed against women or children. He also appealed against the ongoing protests across the country especially following the rape and murder of a trainee doctor in Kolkata; he added that early justice would play a great role in boosting the safety of women, who make up half of the world’s population. Modi admitted there are strict laws for women’s security but it is paramount that the justice system acts cohesively for better implementation of these laws. He also talked about the new branding criminal laws under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita which is designed to safeguard the citizens and their integrity without using the colonial legal models. The Prime Minister noted that such laws aimed not only in creating preventive mechanisms for furthering lawbreakers but also to protect citizens, especially laws against women and children’s offenders.
