Comedian Warns Fans: “Do Not Click on Any Links”
Mumbai: Popular comedian and content creator Tanmay Bhat became the latest victim of a cyberattack after his Twitter (now X) account was hacked to promote a meme cryptocurrency. Hackers took control of his account on Sunday night, posting misleading tweets about launching a meme coin allegedly backed by his YouTube revenue.
The compromised account, which has over 6.6 million followers, posted messages hyping a supposed meme coin project, claiming it was linked to Bhat’s online content earnings. The fraudulent tweet read:
“I love memes and Solana so I figured it was time for me to drop my own coin. Dev supply will be locked momentarily, I will be using YouTube revenue from streams and videos to support the coin and implementing it into my content.”
Shortly after the hack, Bhat alerted his followers via Instagram, warning them not to engage with any links from his X account.
Bhat’s Immediate Response to the Hack
At around 8:22 PM, hackers initiated the posts about meme coins. However, Bhat quickly took to his Instagram Stories to address the situation, writing:
“My Twitter has been hacked. Please don’t click on any links. Working to fix it.”
All fraudulent posts have since been deleted, and Bhat’s account appears to have been restored. The last legitimate post from his X account before the hack was on January 26, where he praised the Disney+ Hotstar coverage of a Coldplay concert.
Interestingly, his pinned post on X features an image of a dog using a laptop, captioned:
“Please imagine this photo whenever you don’t like something I tweet, it might make you less angry.”

What Are Meme Coins?
Meme coins are cryptocurrencies that emerge from internet memes, jokes, or pop culture references. Unlike traditional digital currencies like Bitcoin or Ethereum, meme coins often begin as humorous or speculative projects. However, some, such as Dogecoin (DOGE) and Shiba Inu (SHIB), have gained massive popularity due to celebrity endorsements and social media trends.
Cybersecurity Concerns and Growing Threats
Bhat’s case highlights the rising trend of social media hacks targeting influencers and public figures to promote cryptocurrency scams. Such cyberattacks aim to exploit the trust that these personalities have built with their audience.
With the increasing frequency of such incidents, users are advised to:
- Enable Two-Factor Authentication (2FA): Adding an extra security layer can prevent unauthorized access.
- Avoid Clicking Suspicious Links: Always verify links before interacting with them.
- Report Hacked Accounts Immediately: Platforms like X provide options to report compromised accounts and regain access.
Conclusion
While Tanmay Bhat has regained control of his account, the incident underscores the need for heightened cybersecurity awareness, especially for public figures. As meme coins continue to gain traction, scams involving high-profile individuals are also likely to rise. Users must stay cautious and avoid engaging with suspicious investment schemes promoted through hacked accounts.
