New Delhi, June 10, 2025 – A devastating fire tore through a residential building in Delhi’s Dwarka Sector-13 on Tuesday morning, claiming the lives of three members of a single family in a heart-wrenching tragedy. The blaze, which erupted around 9:58 AM in Shapath Society near MRV School, forced a father and his two young children to leap from their balcony in a desperate bid to escape, only to succumb to their injuries. The incident has left the community in shock, raising urgent questions about fire safety in urban residential complexes.

Background of the Incident

The fire broke out on the eighth and ninth floors of a multi-storied residential building in Shapath Society, a densely populated housing complex in Dwarka. The cause of the fire remains under investigation, though preliminary reports suggest a possible electrical fault or gas leak. The blaze spread rapidly, engulfing the upper floors and trapping residents in a haze of thick, toxic smoke. The Delhi Fire Services (DFS) responded swiftly, deploying eight fire tenders and sky lifts, but the intensity of the flames and the height of the building posed significant challenges.

This tragedy underscores ongoing concerns about fire safety in Delhi’s high-rise residential buildings. Many older complexes, like Shapath Society, lack modern fire suppression systems or adequate evacuation protocols, leaving residents vulnerable in emergencies. The incident has prompted the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) and Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) to initiate structural safety assessments of the affected building.

What Happened: A Breakdown of the Tragedy

  • The Fire’s Onset: At approximately 9:58 AM, residents reported heavy smoke and flames emanating from an apartment on the eighth floor. The fire quickly spread to the ninth floor, cutting off escape routes for those on the upper levels.
  • Desperate Escape Attempt: Yash Yadav, a 35-year-old businessman in the flex board industry, along with his 10-year-old twins, a boy and a girl, found themselves trapped in their apartment. With flames closing in, they attempted to escape by jumping from their balcony. Tragically, all three were declared dead upon arrival at nearby hospitals, Yash at IGI Hospital and the children at Aakash Hospital.
  • Survivors and Rescue Efforts: Yadav’s wife and elder son were rescued and are receiving treatment at IGI Hospital for injuries sustained during the fire. The Delhi Fire Services, supported by sky lifts, evacuated all other residents of the building. No additional fatalities have been reported.
  • Immediate Response: To prevent further risks, authorities cut off electricity and PNG (piped natural gas) connections to the building. The DDA and MCD have been notified to evaluate the structural integrity of the affected building, ensuring it is safe for residents to return.

Community Impact and Response

The tragedy has sent ripples of grief and panic through Shapath Society and surrounding areas. Eyewitnesses described harrowing scenes of residents on lower floors evacuating swiftly, while those on higher floors were seen waving for
