Endless Traffic Chaos at Mahakumbh Mela Sparks Public Outcry
3 min read
Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh: The ongoing Mahakumbh Mela in Prayagraj, hailed as the world’s largest religious gathering, has been overshadowed by severe traffic congestion, leaving millions of devotees stranded for hours. A viral video showcasing an unending traffic jam along Sangam Road has sparked outrage among the public, raising questions about the Yogi Adityanath-led government’s management of the grand event.
Traffic Gridlock Paralyzes Pilgrims
The video circulating on social media depicts vehicles moving at a snail’s pace, stuck in a seemingly endless queue spanning between 200-300 kilometers. The traffic deadlock, exacerbated by police barricades intended to regulate pilgrim movement, has led to logistical nightmares, with essential supplies struggling to reach devotees.

Political Backlash and Public Criticism
Following the viral video, opposition leader and Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav took a strong stance against the Uttar Pradesh government. In a scathing critique, Yadav alleged that the congestion has led to a severe shortage of food, medicines, and fuel, causing immense hardship for devotees.
“Due to traffic jams everywhere in Prayagraj, neither food grains, vegetables, spices are available nor medicines, petrol, or diesel. The condition of crores of hungry, thirsty, tired, and exhausted devotees stuck in Prayagraj and Maha Kumbh premises is worsening by the hour,” Yadav posted on X (formerly Twitter).
He further demanded that a more competent administration be put in charge of the event, implying that the current leadership has failed to maintain order amid the massive footfall.
Voices from the Ground
The chaos has prompted strong reactions from citizens and devotees, who have taken to social media to express their frustration. Many emphasized the urgent need for infrastructural improvements, particularly road expansions and traffic management enhancements.
A social media user highlighted the precarious situation, stating, “Deva Road in Lucknow needs to be converted into a double lane. Accidents occur daily, and traffic jams last for hours.”
Another post warned travelers heading to Mahakumbh, saying, “Traffic jam of 15 km before Jabalpur… still 400 km to Prayagraj. Please check traffic updates before traveling!”
Massive Turnout Despite Challenges
Despite these challenges, the Mahakumbh Mela continues to witness an overwhelming turnout. According to PTI, 46.19 lakh devotees took a holy dip in the sacred Sangam waters until 8 am on Monday, and since the event began last month, approximately 44 crore pilgrims have participated in the religious festivities.
Conclusion: A Test of Governance
The Mahakumbh Mela, a spiritual cornerstone of Hindu faith, has once again proven its unmatched significance. However, the logistical mismanagement of traffic and infrastructure has raised serious concerns about the government’s preparedness to handle such a colossal gathering. With growing public dissatisfaction and political pressure mounting, authorities must act swiftly to mitigate further chaos and ensure a smoother experience for the millions of pilgrims still expected to arrive.
