Investigation Launched into EY India After CA’s Death Allegedly Linked to Work
2 min readThe Labour Ministry of India has opened an inquiry into sexual harassment complaints from Ernst & Young (EY) after a Chartered Accountant of S R Batliboi a member of EY Global was found dead at home aged 26. Anna died on July 20 of exhaustion and uneasiness and was hospitalized in a Pune facility. Her mother has said that stress at work was the reason why her daughter had gradually become worse, and died.
The Union Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Shobha Karandlaje said that the labour ministry is equally concerned and pursuing the case vigorously while condoling the incident. She also underscored the government’s support of justice with regard to the incident when making a statement on social media platform X.
Anna’s mother wrote to EY India’s head about her daughter being forced to work hard and becoming severely ill as a result that quickly went viral. In response to these allegations, EY India has refuted these allegations arguing that Anna had worked for the company for only four months and her duties were similar to that of other employees. Speaking with the media Rajiv Memani, EY India Chairman stated that the company does not think that work pressure could have killed Anna. He also mentioned that the assistance of EY was also obvious in helping Anna’s family during this times of despair.
The case has raised awareness on stress in the workplace and its effects on the human beings working there. This case really shows how it is getting increasingly worrisome about the work environments and how organizations must pay attention to the welfare of their employees. Former Union Minister and BJP leader Rajeev Chandrasekhar also condemned the act by the US and also called on the Labour Ministry to look into the matter and probe into the allegations raised by Anna’s mother. Looking at the example of this case, one realizes the dangers of high-pressure workplace conditions and the necessity to protect the employees’ psychological and physical state.
