“Identify and Isolate ‘Dimagi Naxals'”: PM Modi Issues Stark Warning on 80th Independence Day Alongside Massive Skill and Tech Push

Leading the nation’s 80th Independence Day celebrations from the historic ramparts of the Red Fort on Saturday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi delivered a multifaceted address that blended ambitious developmental blueprints with a severe warning against intellectual extremism.
The mega event, marked by a historic first-time rendition of Vande Mataram during the official flag-hoisting ceremony, saw the Prime Minister outline sweeping initiatives focusing on Artificial Intelligence (AI), free competitive coaching, sports, and semiconductor manufacturing, all driving toward the vision of a “Viksit Bharat” (Developed India).
The Warning: The Threat of “Dimagi Naxals”
While celebrating the rapid decline of armed Maoist insurgencies across the country, PM Modi issued a stern warning against a new, insidious enemy: the Dimagi Naxal (intellectual or ideological Naxal).
He highlighted that historically, Maoist violence kept several regions hostage, resulting in the tragic loss of over 3,500 security personnel-a casualty rate he noted was higher than in conventional wars. “When we came to power in 2014, we swore to rid the country of Naxals. I am happy Maoist violence is taking its last breath,” he declared.
However, the Prime Minister warned that the battle is shifting from the jungles to the corridors of power and civil society.
“For years, those with Naxal mentality had their place in the power corridors. They were in government committees as advisors,” PM Modi stated. “We have succeeded in getting rid of armed Naxals in the jungles, but ‘dimagi Naxals’ are looking for opportunities to create violence and unrest. They want to drag the society on the wrong path. These ‘dimagi Naxals’ have to be identified and isolated.”
The Blueprint for “Viksit Bharat”: 6 Major Announcements
Transitioning from security to development, PM Modi announced six massive national initiatives aimed at empowering the youth and cementing India’s status as a global technological powerhouse.
1. AI Skill Training for One Crore Youth
Pledging to make India a global leader in artificial intelligence, PM Modi announced a massive nationwide skilling program. “In the coming one year, we will work to provide AI skill training to 1 crore youth, so that the youth of our nation possess the capability to lead the world in the domain of AI,” he said.
2. Free Online Coaching for Competitive Exams
Addressing the immense financial and societal pressure faced by middle-class and low-income families, the Prime Minister announced the launch of a comprehensive, free online coaching network for various competitive examinations. “Coaching classes burden the poor and the middle class… I assure these families that they can save thousands of crores of rupees,” he added.
3. Nationwide Olympic Sports Talent Hunt
Expressing disappointment that India currently fails to qualify for nearly two-thirds of Olympic events, PM Modi set an ambitious target for the 2036 Olympics-a tournament India is strongly bidding to host. The government will launch a massive talent hunt targeting children aged 5 to 15 across villages, towns, and schools to identify and train world-class athletes.
4. Civil Defence Reforms
To address modern-day crises and emergencies, a new, vibrant “Civil Defence volunteer force” will be established and trained using modern technological systems.
5. Massive Semiconductor Expansion
Highlighting that “chips are indispensable,” the Prime Minister celebrated the three major semiconductor plants already established in India and announced that “five to eight additional semiconductor plants are set to commence operations very soon in the coming 7-8 years.”
6. The 100 GW Nuclear Energy Target
To secure India’s long-term energy independence, PM Modi outlined the goal of reaching 100 GW of nuclear power by 2047. He confirmed plans to commission five new nuclear reactors within this decade, celebrating India’s recent mastery of fast breeder nuclear technology.
A Historic Independence Day Ceremony
The 80th Independence Day was historically significant for its ceremonial changes. For the very first time, an Army band played Vande Mataram at the Red Fort complex, commemorating 150 years of the enduring national song written by Bankim Chandra Chatterjee.
Following the flag hoisting, two Mi-17 helicopters of the Indian Air Force showered flower petals over the venue-one carrying the national flag and the other proudly displaying a flag depicting ‘Vande Mataram’.
Earlier in the morning, PM Modi paid homage to Mahatma Gandhi at Rajghat, reaffirming his commitment to drawing inspiration from Gandhi’s vision to make India a progressive and prosperous nation.
