‘Toxic’ Box Office Day 1: Yash’s Grand Return Shatters Records Despite Polarizing Reviews and “A” Certificate Controversy

Toxic: A Fairy Tale for Grown-Ups, the highly anticipated pan-India action-drama starring “Rocking Star” Yash and Kiara Advani, roared into theaters this Wednesday, setting the box office ablaze while simultaneously drawing highly polarized reviews from critics and sparking debates online.
Directed by critically acclaimed filmmaker Geetu Mohandas, the film marks Yash’s monumental return to the big screen following the historic success of K.G.F: Chapter 2. While the box office numbers suggest a massive commercial triumph, the reception to the film’s extremely graphic content tells a different story.
A Historic Box Office Opening
Despite its weekday release, Toxic completely dominated the Indian box office. According to industry tracker Sacnilk, the film recorded an estimated ₹101.10 crore net in India across all five languages on its opening day. The gross domestic collection reportedly touched a staggering ₹140 crore.

This monumental haul makes Toxic the second-highest opening for an Indian film this year, trailing only slightly behind Dhurandhar 2, which collected ₹103 crore on its first day.
The release of Toxic completely derailed the theatrical runs of existing films. Emraan Hashmi’s Awarapan 2 saw a drastic drop, earning just ₹90 lakhs on Day 13 compared to ₹3.75 crore the day prior.
With this spectacular debut, Yash cements his status as an unparalleled box-office titan, becoming one of the few Indian stars capable of consistently delivering ₹100 crore openers.
The Film: A Clash of Sensibilities
Set primarily in 1947 Goa and expanding across two decades to Macau, Toxic follows the violent, blood-soaked journey of Raya (Yash). The film features a massive ensemble cast, including Nayanthara (as Raya’s protective sister), Tara Sutaria, Rukmini Vasanth, Huma Qureshi, and Kiara Advani, who plays a grieving circus trapeze artist.
The film boasts high-octane sequences choreographed by Hollywood action director JJ Perry, coupled with an electrifying background score. However, critics have pointed out a severe disconnect between Geetu Mohandas’s usually nuanced, emotional storytelling and the hyper-masculine, visually excessive demands of a typical Yash vehicle.
Prominent film critic Shubhra Gupta noted the film’s exhausting reliance on gore and sexist dialogue to appease its core demographic. “How can a fairytale be so hollow? Too much sound, too much fury, signifying very little,” she wrote in her review, while praising Kiara Advani as the film’s emotional anchor.
Trade analyst and critic Taran Adarsh echoed these sentiments, rating the film 2/5 stars. He labeled it a “classic case of style over substance,” stating that while the first half is engaging, the second half “falls flat… the story stagnates, the writing lacks meat, and what you’re served are action sequences… and more action sequences.”
The “A” Certificate Controversy
The extreme violence and adult themes in Toxic earned it a strict “A” (Adults Only) certificate from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC).
However, reports of children being permitted into theaters have sparked outrage online. Taking to X (formerly Twitter), a frustrated moviegoer wrote, “My theatre anxiety is peaking as a little child is sitting next to me. And this is an adult movie with violence and A-rated scenes. Parents stop bringing your [kids] to Adult films! Please…”
The post quickly went viral, prompting netizens to criticize both irresponsible parents and negligent theater management for exposing minors to “lifetime trauma” caused by the film’s graphic content.
As Toxic heads into its first weekend, the film rides purely on Yash’s immense star power. Industry watchers will be keeping a close eye on whether the film can sustain its momentum or if the polarizing reviews will eventually drag down the historic opening numbers.
