Mystery Deepens in Andhra Pradesh: Tragic Death of Pet Dog Hampers Massive Search for Missing 2-Year-Old Girl in Tuni

KAKINADA – The frantic search for two-and-a-half-year-old Sunkara Gnaneswari, who vanished from a palm oil plantation in Kakinada district 10 days ago, has taken a tragic and mysterious turn. The family’s pet dog-who was the toddler’s only companion at the time of her disappearance and the last major lead for investigators-died over the weekend, casting a shadow over the multi-agency rescue operations.

Despite the deployment of over 400 personnel, including the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), and advanced drone technology, the little girl remains untraced.

Here is a detailed breakdown of the agonizing sequence of events, the ongoing massive search operation, and the latest updates on the case.

A Tragic Miscommunication: How It Unfolded

The ordeal began on the afternoon of June 6 in Ch. Agraharam, a hamlet in the Dondavaka panchayat of Tuni Rural mandal. The child’s parents, Sunkara Ganesh and Bhavani, who work as caretakers and agricultural laborers, were at a 50-acre palm oil plantation along with their daughter and their pet dog. The girl’s grandfather, Chinnabbai, also works at the plantation as a gardener.

A fatal miscommunication between the parents led to the girl’s disappearance. Assuming that the other had already taken Gnaneswari safely back to their house, both parents left the plantation separately. It was only upon reuniting at home that they realized their daughter was missing.

According to local accounts, a villager spotted the toddler wandering near a hillock later that evening, accompanied only by the pet dog. When the villager attempted to approach the girl to bring her to safety, the fiercely loyal dog barked aggressively, preventing any intervention. Believing she was safe and under the supervision of her parents somewhere nearby, the villager left-marking the last known sighting of the child.

The Dog’s Mysterious Death

With Gnaneswari still missing, a glimmer of hope emerged when the pet dog returned home alone on June 9. Sensing a crucial opportunity, a specialized police team from Hyderabad stepped in on June 12 and fitted the dog with a GPS-enabled collar, releasing it near the hillock with the hope that it would retrace its steps back to the child.

However, the dog merely roamed the surrounding orchards before returning home once again. According to Tuni Rural Sub-Inspector Krishnamachari, GPS data revealed the dog had walked nearly 80 kilometers across the rough terrain.

Tragically, the animal had reportedly been acting unusually since its initial return, refusing food and appearing severely ill. On Saturday afternoon, the dog succumbed to what police suspect was a severe viral infection contracted in the wild. The animal’s body has been sent for a post-mortem examination to determine the exact cause of death, but its loss has dealt a devastating blow to the investigation.

Search Operations Scaled Up: NDRF Enters the Fray

Now in its tenth day, the search operation has escalated into one of the largest the district has seen. Over 400 rescue workers are combing through dense thickets, plantations, water bodies, and rocky terrains.

Following direct orders from Andhra Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan, NDRF teams joined the operation on Sunday. They are working in tandem with a 40-member SDRF unit, 10 specialized police teams, and personnel from the Revenue, Fire, and Forest departments. State Home Minister V. Anitha is also closely monitoring the situation.

Key highlights of the ongoing investigation:

  • Advanced Technology: Police are utilizing high-tech drones to scan difficult and dense topographies, while a dedicated team has scrutinized footage from 38 CCTV cameras in the surrounding areas.
  • Wider Net: Two specialized police teams have been deployed to thoroughly check nearby railway stations and bus terminals, keeping all investigative angles-including the possibility of abduction-open.
  • Forest Trackers: Night watchers and base camp experts from the Forest Department have been roped in to navigate the dense woods and investigate the harrowing possibility of wild animal encounters

.

  • Public Reward: To incentivize public assistance, the district administration has announced a cash reward of ₹1,00,000 for any credible information leading to the child’s whereabouts.

Kakinada Superintendent of Police G. Bindu Madhav has directed officers to leave no stone unturned. As days turn into weeks, the entire state watches with bated breath, holding on to the fading hope for Gnaneswari’s safe return.
