Sonal Dinusha’s Heroic 133 Denies India a Clean Sweep; WTC Final Hopes Hanging by a Thread

A bloody-minded, physically cramping Sonal Dinusha stood like an impenetrable wall on the final day of the second Test at the Sinhalese Sports Club (SSC) ground on Thursday, denying the Shubman Gill-led Indian cricket team a series-sweeping victory.
Dinusha’s remarkable, unbeaten 133 off 264 balls salvaged a gritty draw for Sri Lanka. While India claimed the two-match series 1-0-following a dominant 165-run victory in the first Test at Galle-the agonizing final day in Colombo has severely complicated India’s path to the World Test Championship (WTC) Final.
The Match: A Frustrating Day for the Indians
India had seemingly engineered a perfect scenario to win the match. After posting a massive 503/9 declared in their first innings, India bowled out the hosts for 290 and immediately enforced the follow-on.
By the end of Day 4, Sri Lanka was reeling at 229/6, leading by a mere 16 runs. The expectation was that India’s potent bowling attack would rapidly clean up the tail on the morning of Day 5.
However, they met an immovable object in 25-year-old southpaw Sonal Dinusha.
Batting alongside the lower order, Dinusha forged a legendary, match-saving 112-run partnership with Keshara Nuwantha (46 off 150 balls) for the seventh wicket. The duo batted for a crucial 174 minutes, completely draining the Indian pacers and spinners on a slow, low, turning track.
Despite valiant efforts from spinners Manav Suthar, Saransh Jain, and Ravindra Jadeja-who bowled nearly 60 overs on the trot over three days-the Sri Lankan lower order refused to buckle. When the two captains finally shook hands, agreeing to a draw, Sri Lanka’s second innings scoreboard read an impressive 429/9.
A Historic Milestone for Dinusha
Sonal Dinusha was deservedly named the Player of the Match. His epic resistance not only saved his team but also placed him in the history books. By scoring three centuries in the series, he became only the third batter in Test cricket history to score twin hundreds in a Test match after his team was forced to follow on. He joins an elite club alongside India’s Vijay Hazare (who set the record 78 years ago) and Zimbabwe’s Andy Flower.
“When the team is down, I wanted to get runs for the team. Getting runs against India is a pleasure as a player,” Dinusha said post-match, crediting his specific preparation for turning pitches and the immense support of the Sri Lankan tailenders.

Captain Shubman Gill Reflects on the Draw
Despite leading India to their first overseas Test series victory since beating the West Indies in July 2023, Captain Shubman Gill expressed palpable frustration at the inability to close out the match.
“It gets very frustrating. As the match went on, the wicket got slower. Unless you are playing a shot and looking to make a run, it is difficult to take a wicket,” Gill explained.
He firmly defended his decision to enforce the follow-on, stating, “Keeping the weather in mind, you take the best decision you can in the moment… I think Test cricket won today.”
WTC Final Dreams in Serious Danger
The draw leaves India in a precarious position regarding the World Test Championship.
Earning 16 points for the draw, India currently sits fifth in the WTC points table. India now has five wins and two draws in 11 Tests, holding a win percentage of 51.52% (down from 53.33% before this match). They trail behind Australia (80%), South Africa (75%), New Zealand (72.22%), and Bangladesh (55.56%).
To qualify for the WTC Final, India faces a daunting road ahead. They have seven Tests remaining-two against New Zealand and a grueling five-match Border-Gavaskar Trophy series away against Australia.
To mathematically guarantee a spot in the Final without relying on other teams’ results, India must win at least five of these seven upcoming matches.
“If we play the New Zealand series well and then, hopefully, by the time the Australia series comes, we just have to win the series,” a hopeful Gill concluded. “I still think we’ve got a pretty good chance.”
