From Bihar to the Record Books: 15-Year-Old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi Smashes Fastest 50 in List-A History
3 min read
Teenage cricketing prodigy Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has done it again. Continuing his meteoric and almost unbelievable rise in world cricket, the 15-year-old completely dismantled the Sri Lanka A bowling attack, smashing a record-breaking 11-ball half-century in the final of the tri-nation series in Dambulla on Sunday morning.
Opening the innings for India A, the young left-hander scored a blistering 94 off just 29 deliveries-hammering 10 fours and 8 sixes-propelling his team to a massive 377-9 and ultimately securing a 66-run victory.
His 11-ball fifty officially breaks the long-standing record for the fastest half-century in the history of professional 50-over (List A) cricket, shattering the previous 12-ball record set by Sri Lanka’s Kaushalya Weeraratne in 2005.
The Knock: “No Pressure, Just Execution”
Sooryavanshi arrived at the crease under considerable scrutiny after struggling to convert his starts in the preceding round-robin matches of the tri-series. However, after a long net session and a crucial conversation with India-A coach Hrishikesh Kanitkar, the teenager was given a “free hand” to play his natural game.
He faced only a single dot ball during his race to fifty, utilizing his remaining 10 deliveries to smash five fours and five sixes. He fell just six runs short of breaking the record for the fastest-ever List A century (currently held by Australia’s Jake Fraser-McGurk at 29 balls).
“Even when I struggled, Hrishi sir told me, ‘tu apna natural game khel, zyada soch mat’ (play your natural game, don’t overthink),” Sooryavanshi told reporters after winning the Player of the Match award. “There was no pressure on me. The idea was to execute what I had planned for the first 10 overs.”
The Origins: A Father’s Sacrifice
Born in 2011 in Tajpur, a small town in Bihar’s Samastipur district, Sooryavanshi’s journey was built on immense sacrifice. Spotting his son’s prodigious talent at age four, his father, Sanjiv-a farmer and former aspiring cricketer-sold the family’s farmland to fund Vaibhav’s training at a cricket academy in Patna, over 100 kilometers away.
That sacrifice ignited a timeline of achievements that borders on the surreal:
- Age 12: Became one of the youngest ever to make a Ranji Trophy debut (for Bihar).
- Age 13: Became the youngest player to sign an IPL contract, bought by Rajasthan Royals for ₹1.1 crore.
- Age 14: Made his IPL debut, hitting a six off his first ball, and later scoring a 35-ball century-the fastest by an Indian in the league.
- Age 15: Dominated the 2026 Under-19 World Cup, scoring 175 off 80 balls in the final against England to win Player of the Tournament.
The Unbelievable 2026 IPL Season
Sooryavanshi’s recent List A record comes immediately after what is arguably the greatest individual season in IPL history. In the 2026 season, the 15-year-old scored 776 runs in 16 matches at an absurd strike rate of 237.30, winning the Orange Cap. He shattered Chris Gayle’s 2012 record by hitting 72 sixes in a single season and became the fastest player in IPL history to reach 1,000 career runs (in just 440 balls).
He swept five individual awards, prompting cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar to remark: “I watched him bat. It was magnificent. He is something truly special.”
What’s Next: An International Debut Looms
Despite his breathtaking form, Sooryavanshi was notably omitted from India’s senior ODI squad for the upcoming series against England. However, he has been officially named in the senior T20 squad for the upcoming bilateral series against Ireland (starting June 26) and England (starting July 1).
If he takes the field in either series, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi will officially surpass Sachin Tendulkar to become the youngest player ever to represent the Indian men’s senior national team.
For a boy who was practicing in a rural Bihar backyard just a few years ago, the speed of his ascent is unprecedented. And at just 15 years old, he has only just begun.
