Tragic Fire at Lucknow Coaching Centre Claims 15 Lives; High-Level Probe Ordered as CM Yogi Announces Ex-Gratia

A devastating fire ripped through a three-storey commercial complex in Lucknow’s Aliganj area on Monday afternoon, claiming the lives of at least 15 people, predominantly young students, and leaving seven others injured. The tragic incident, which unfolded on Usha Mehta Marg, has plunged the city into mourning and raised urgent questions about fire safety regulations in densely packed commercial establishments.

The building housed a mix of businesses, including an animation coaching centre, a gaming zone, and a ground-floor pet shop. Preliminary reports suggest the blaze rapidly engulfed the upper floors, trapping dozens of students aged between 16 and 18 years.

A Desperate Struggle for Survival

The fire reportedly erupted inside the commercial complex and spread with alarming speed, trapping occupants before they could securely evacuate. The thick, toxic smoke severely hampered visibility and breathing, creating panic on the upper floors.

Eyewitnesses reported harrowing scenes as several desperate students were forced to jump from the first floor of the burning building to escape the flames. Local residents, who were the first responders on the scene, immediately rushed to move the injured away from the intense heat and debris, taking them to nearby medical facilities.

Dr. Anil Agrawal, Medical Superintendent at the Trauma Centre of King George’s Medical University (KGMU), confirmed the casualties. “Fifteen individuals were brought in a deceased state. They will be sent to the morgue for autopsy. Among the seven injured, some sustained severe back injuries after jumping from the building to escape the fire. They are currently receiving priority treatment,” he stated.

Heroic Rescue Operations

The Lucknow fire department and local police launched a massive rescue effort shortly after receiving the distress call. The intensity of the smoke and the narrow access points made the operation incredibly challenging.

• Breaching Walls: With the main staircases blocked by intense flames and smoke, firefighters and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) personnel took an alternative route. They breached a dividing wall from an adjacent building of similar height to gain access and evacuate those trapped.
• External Evacuation: Firefighting teams equipped with safety gear scaled the building using external ladders, while rescue personnel ventured inside using wet blankets to shield the survivors.
• Search and Cooling: All rooms and bathrooms on the top floor were meticulously searched. Authorities successfully rescued 13 trapped individuals before bringing the blaze under control, after which cooling operations commenced.

Government Response and Financial Assistance

The magnitude of the tragedy prompted immediate responses from the highest levels of government. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, who was addressing a public gathering in Aligarh when the incident occurred, abruptly cancelled his remaining events and rushed back to Lucknow.

Upon his return, the Chief Minister visited the incident site and met with the injured victims and their families at the KGMU Trauma Centre. He has ordered a high-level inquiry into the incident, directing the Director General of Police (DGP) and the Additional Chief Secretary (Home) to submit a detailed report.

“The matter will be thoroughly investigated, and those found responsible will be brought to justice,” CM Yogi affirmed.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, President Droupadi Murmu, Vice President C.P. Radhakrishnan, and Union Home Minister Amit Shah also expressed profound grief over the loss of young lives.

Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav offered his condolences while calling for a transparent investigation. “There should be an honest investigation into the causes behind it-those children could have belonged to anyone’s family,” he stated, urging the government to ensure the best possible medical care for the survivors.

Uttar Pradesh Congress Committee president Ajay Rai heavily criticized the state administration, calling the incident a “gross negligence” and a “failure of the government” right in the state capital, demanding an immediate high-level probe into potential safety regulatory lapses.

As Lucknow mourns the loss of its youth, the focus now shifts to the ongoing investigation and the urgent need for stringent fire safety audits across commercial complexes housing educational institutes.
