Siraj, Tilak Varma, and Vijay Deverakonda Slapped with Notices Over Illegal TG20 League

In a major development that has sent shockwaves through both the sports and entertainment fraternities, the Telangana Cricket Association (TCA) has issued formal legal notices to several high-profile cricketers and Tollywood actors. International cricketers Mohammed Siraj, Tilak Varma, and former India player Ambati Rayudu, along with superstar actors Vijay Deverakonda and Venkatesh Daggubati, have been pulled up for their reported association with the proposed TG20 League.

The TCA has strongly objected to the involvement of these celebrities, alleging that the Hyderabad Cricket Association (HCA) is organizing the franchise-based tournament without securing mandatory approvals from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).

The Core Allegations Against the TG20 League

TCA General Secretary Gurava Reddy has raised severe concerns regarding the regulatory status and governance of the upcoming TG20 League.

The TCA’s primary contentions include:

  • Lack of BCCI Authorization: The HCA is allegedly engaging with corporate entities to run a franchise-based state-level Premier League without the required operational sanctions from the BCCI.
  • Constant Rebranding: According to the TCA, the HCA has frequently changed the tournament’s name to obscure its lack of compliance-shifting from the “Telangana Premier League” to “TTL,” then to “TG20 Premier League,” and currently just “TG20.”
  • Violation of Governance Mandates: The TCA points out that to host such a league, the HCA’s general body must formally elect a governing council and a league chairman during an Annual General Meeting (AGM). The TCA alleges that this crucial democratic process never took place.

Why Target the Celebrities?

The legal notices, issued through the TCA’s advocate, caution the actors and cricketers that their endorsements give the TG20 League a false veneer of legitimacy.

The association argues that having icons like Siraj, Varma, and Deverakonda endorse the event creates a highly misleading impression among aspiring rural cricketers, corporate sponsors, and the general public. The TCA claims that this misrepresentation leads stakeholders to believe that all statutory, administrative, and regulatory compliances have been met.

The celebrities have been asked to officially disclose the nature of their commercial or promotional interests in the league and clarify whether they independently verified the tournament’s legal status before associating with it.

Potential Legal Consequences

The TCA has taken a firm stance, demanding a formal response from the involved personalities within seven days.

If the celebrities fail to distance themselves from the tournament or provide a satisfactory explanation, the TCA has threatened to escalate the matter. The association warned that the endorsers could face:

  • Independent civil liability lawsuits for negligent misrepresentation.
  • Scrutiny under the Consumer Protection Act (2019) for promoting misleading advertisements.
  • Remedial action pursued through civil courts, tribunals, and sporting institutions.

A History of Administrative Friction

This ongoing dispute highlights the deepening rift between the state’s cricketing bodies. In 2021, the BCCI had officially directed the HCA to collaborate with the TCA to promote and develop cricket in the rural districts outside of Hyderabad city. However, TCA representatives allege that the HCA completely ignored this directive, choosing instead to push forward with unauthorized commercial ventures.

Current Status

As of now, neither the targeted cricketers-including Tilak Varma, who is currently captaining the India A squad in Sri Lanka-nor actors Vijay Deverakonda and Venkatesh Daggubati have issued public responses regarding the legal notices. Both actors remain heavily occupied with their respective shooting schedules, with Deverakonda preparing for the release of his historical drama Ranabaali and Venkatesh filming Adarsha Kutumbam.
