The teenagers were surrounded, intimidated, and brutally assaulted, with video footage purportedly showing the minor girl being openly molested and groped by the attackers. The perpetrators recorded the horrifying ordeal and circulated it on social media. The video quickly went viral, triggering widespread public fury and raising serious questions about the safety of women and children in the state.
Tejashwi’s Scathing Attack: “Busy with Photo Ops”
Addressing a press conference at his residence in Patna on Tuesday, Tejashwi Yadav painted a grim picture of Bihar’s security apparatus, describing the current situation as “alarming” and “very worrying.”
“The episode symbolizes a total collapse of law and order. Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary is entirely unable to run the state and should resign immediately, owning moral responsibility,” Yadav asserted. He sharply criticized the Chief Minister’s priorities, alleging, “The Chief Minister seems to be occupied only with lighting lamps and photo ops, while criminals are roaming free and our daughters are unsafe on the streets.”
Yadav also took a sarcastic swipe at the ruling government on social media platform X (formerly Twitter). Mocking alleged attempts to communalize crimes, he imagined a fictional late-night conversation where the Chief Minister asks the police what color ‘gamchha’ (traditional cotton towel) the accused was wearing, implying the government only cares about a crime if it fits a specific political narrative.
The ‘Moral Policing’ Controversy: Absurd Statements from the Ruling Coalition
The political temperature reached a boiling point following a series of highly controversial remarks made by prominent NDA figures regarding the incident.
Jamui MLA and Bihar Minister Shreyasi Singh-a former Commonwealth Games gold medallist-sparked intense outrage during a television interview when she stated, “Moral policing, on one hand, can be done in a more decent and elegant fashion, but the way they mishandled and mistreated the boy and the girl together is absolutely not tolerable.”
Tejashwi Yadav was quick to pounce on the remark, asking incredulously if the BJP ministers in the NDA government now believe that harassment, sexual assault, and trauma under the guise of ‘moral policing’ should be carried out in a “respectful” or “sattvik” (pure) manner. Following the backlash, Singh issued a clarification, claiming her words were edited and taken entirely out of context by the media.
Furthermore, the opposition slammed JD(U) state president Umesh Singh Kushwaha, who insensitively attempted to downplay the horrific assault by describing it as a “chhitput ghatna” (an isolated, sporadic, or minor incident).
“The way NDA people are speaking in public is very shameful. Before passing such absurd remarks, they should consider the mental condition of the victim’s family,” Yadav told the press, demanding a public apology from the ruling functionaries.
Latest Updates: Main Accused Shot in Police Encounter
As political pressure mounted, the Jamui Police escalated their crackdown on the perpetrators. A Special Investigation Team (SIT) led by the Sub-Divisional Police Officer was immediately constituted.
On Tuesday, police achieved a major breakthrough. The main accused, identified as Nandan Yadav (a local tractor driver seen wearing a gamchha in the video), along with his accomplice Hariram Yadav, were tracked down to an area covered in thick bushes. According to Munger DIG Rakesh Kumar, the accused opened fire on the approaching police team. In the ensuing retaliatory fire, both accused sustained gunshot wounds to their legs.
The injured suspects have been admitted to the Sadar Hospital for treatment under heavy police guard. Prior to this encounter, three juveniles involved in the harassment were also apprehended by the authorities. The police have registered a case under the stringent provisions of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act and the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, promising speedy trials and the strictest possible punishments.
